Jurisdictions such as San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga & Los Altos Hills, Santa Clara County all now require some level of GreenPoint Rating, in order to apply for a building permit.
California's new Green Code became mandatory as of January 1, 2011. The new Cal Green Code measures are part of the GreenPoint Checklist and Program.
What is GREENPOINT RATED?
The GreenPoint Rated Program allows homes to be comprehensively compared on a level, yet expansive playing field.
GreenPoint Rated is a third-party verification system for the Build-It-Green Green Building Guidelines. GreenPoint Rated is an outgrowth of successful green building programs that have been working in California since 2000. Many of California's local Building Departments now require some level of GreenPoint Program participation.
The points in GreenPoint Rated correspond to green building measures. Point values are assigned based on their benefits to the homeowner and the environment and reflect construction practices that exceed California's building and energy code requirements.
The GreenPoint Rated Program was created through the efforts of a diverse group of building stakeholders including production builders, contractors, architects and designers, multifamily home developers, state and local government leaders, regional and national building-science experts, product manufacturers and suppliers, and green building advocates.
Building officials throughout California, especially in the Bay Area, recognized the value of the GreenPoint Rated Program and it's connection with the CalGreen Code. Many local governments are actively using GreenPoint Rating in their jurisdictions, and many more are developing new requirements to do the same.
In order to apply for a building permit, many Cities and Jurisdictions in California, such as San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga & Los Altos Hills, Santa Clara County require some level of GreenPoint Rating.
The added benefit of this mandatory GreenPoint program participation is that building professionals and homeowners who create well built sustainable green homes have a recognizable, trustworthy seal of approval for their product and home.
The GreenPoint Rater, with your commitment, will walk you and the entire team through from planning to certification. Education, Documentation and Site visits are the tools the Rater will use to ensure Certification.

CAL GREEN INFORMATION
On January 1, 2011 the 2010 CALGreen Building requirements went into effect. The CALGreen Code implements CA Code AB 32 and is another name for Part 11 of Title 24. CALGreen applies to all buildings in California except for industrial or retrofits (i.e. residential, commercial and public buildings).
CALGreen is mostly voluntary provisions, with some mandatory provisions that will gradually change and increase. At this point, the method of enforcement and verification has still not been completely determined by each jurisdiction or city. However, it is very clear that these new requirements of the Title 24 code will quickly become more rigorous.
To make the process easier, Build It Green has incorporated many of the new requirements into the GreenPoint Rated Checklist, which is already required by many cities for permit submittal.
